Best restaurants in North Wales

The "Ponderosa Cafe" in Llangollen, Wales, is a legendary restaurant that sits high on the Horseshoe Pass in the picturesque hills of North Wales. It is much more than just a café – it is a popular meeting place for motorcyclists, hikers, and travelers who wish to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the region. The family-run establishment has a long tradition dating back to the 1980s and has been an integral part of the local culture for decades. However, in November 2024, the café closed its doors after 42 years, causing deep dismay within the community and among regular patrons. Nevertheless, its history and reputation as an iconic local spot remain unforgettable.

Cafe for motorcyclists in Wales

The interior of the "Ponderosa Cafe" was known for its rustic and functional design, perfectly suited to its surroundings. With a large main hall that was expanded by a recently renovated additional seating area, it accommodated many guests who often stopped by after a ride or hike. The furnishings were simple but inviting, featuring wooden furniture and large windows that offered spectacular views of the Clwydian Range and, on clear days, even the peaks of Snowdon. An adjacent gift shop complemented the offerings with souvenirs and local products, while the spacious parking area – often filled with motorcycles – underscored its popularity among bikers. The atmosphere was characterized by a blend of camaraderie and the rugged beauty of nature that surrounded the café.

Traditional cuisine in Llangollen

Culinary-wise, the "Ponderosa Cafe" was renowned for its hearty, homemade cuisine, focusing on filling and flavorful dishes. A highlight was the "Full English Breakfast," a substantial combination of sausages, bacon, eggs, and grilled tomatoes, which was particularly popular among early risers and bikers looking to refuel after a ride through the winding roads of the pass. Equally appreciated was the "Sausage and Egg Bap," a large, soft bun filled with juicy sausages and a perfectly cooked fried egg – a simple yet delicious dish that reflected the café's philosophy: quality without frills. Accompanying this was freshly brewed coffee or tea served in large cups to warm guests in any weather.

In addition to hearty meals, the café also offered sweet treats, like the "Homemade Fruit Cake," which with its moist texture and fruity notes was often enjoyed as the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea. The dishes were always prepared fresh, and although the menu was not overly extravagant, it was characterized by its reliability and the taste of homemade cooking. The café was also a place for social gatherings, with a selection of beverages including local beers that allowed guests to relax after a day in nature. There were even overnight accommodations, making it an ideal stop for longer excursions.

Quick stop for breakfast. Nice to have a choice of foods for full breakfast and the bacon bap was like a bin lid.

A biker's watering hole but all welcome. The views, subject to weather, are spectacular and the walks equally so. Food is cafe style, pies, fish, pasties with chips etc and portions well sized and priced. Worth a drop in.
